Main applications of UV led in the field of air purification and sterilization.
In recent years, with the rapid advancement of technology, the LED field has also seen rapid development. As a new type of LED, UV LED has garnered significant attention due to its numerous excellent characteristics. This article will introduce the main performance, underlying principles, and applications of UV LED in air purification and disinfection-related fields.
- What’s UV led ?
Ultraviolet (UV) refers to the invisible light rays beyond the purple color in the visible light spectrum of sunlight (red, orange, yellow, green, cyan, blue, and violet); it is a general term for radiation with wavelengths ranging from 10nm to 400nm in the electromagnetic spectrum, abbreviated as UV LED. According to the spectrum, UV LEDs can be classified in various ways. Among them, according to the ISO classification standard ISO-DIS-21348 for sunlight, they can be divided into: UVA (400~315nm), NUV (near ultraviolet, 400~300nm), UVB (315~280nm), MUV (mid-ultraviolet, 300~200nm), and UVC (280~100nm).

- UV LED technology VS traditional technology.
Compared to traditional UV lamps, including mercury lamps, UV LEDs offer numerous advantages due to their excellent characteristics:
Instant On/Off: UV LEDs can operate with most commonly used power sources and feature instant On/Off capabilities, eliminating the need to keep them on even when not in use for startup, as is the case with mercury UV lamps. This significantly reduces energy consumption.
No ozone generation: Ozone produced by mercury lamps is prone to cause respiratory problems in users, so a removal device must be installed; UV LEDs do not generate ozone, thus reducing additional costs and energy consumption for air purification vents and the like.
Long lifespan: The lifespan of a mercury lamp is typically around 2,000 hours; however, a UV LED can last for over 10 years when used continuously on/off every day.
Small Form Factor: It is significantly smaller than the original UV lamp, thus enhancing diversity and flexibility in the design of all UV applications.
Mercury-free: Since UV LEDs do not use mercury, they have advantages such as environmental friendliness, long lifespan, energy efficiency, and less heat loss.
- The principle of UV LED sterilization and disinfection
The principle of LED sterilization and disinfection primarily relies on the high energy of short-wavelength UVC. This energy rapidly disrupts the molecular structure within the cells of microorganisms (such as bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens) in a short period of time. By damaging the DNA and RNA of microorganisms, it prevents their reproduction, achieving an efficient and rapid broad-spectrum sterilization effect. This sterilization can be applied to water, air, and surfaces, rendering the cells unable to regenerate.
III. Principles and application areas of UVC LED in air purification and disinfection and sterilization.
1.The principle of UVC LED air purification: photocatalytic principle.
Under the irradiation of light, photocatalysts undergo a photocatalytic reaction akin to photosynthesis, generating highly oxidizing free hydroxyl radicals and reactive oxygen species. They possess strong photo-redox capabilities, capable of oxidizing and decomposing various organic compounds and some inorganic substances. They can disrupt bacterial cell membranes and solidify viral proteins, effectively killing bacteria and decomposing organic pollutants into non-polluting water (H2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2). Consequently, they exhibit potent antibacterial, deodorizing, anti-mildew, anti-fouling, self-cleaning, and air purification functions.
